Effect of Lithium Administration on Regional Blood Flow of Tissues

Abstract
The effect of lithium medication on the blood flow of several organs of the rat was evaluated by means of 3¢¥Rb uptake test.
White rats weighing from 110 to 210 gm were divided in two groups, control and experimental group.
Lithium chloride was given 5 mEq Li per kg of body weight per day intraperitoneally for four days, respectively.
The animals were sacrificed by exanguination 30 seconds after the injection of 10 uCi of ""Rb chloride into tail vein upon the completion of medication.
The salivary glands, lungs, kidneys, liver, small intestine and abdominal muscle were then removed for the measurements of "Rb uptake rates.
The results obtained and conclusion reached from the present study are as follows:
1) "Rb uptake rates of both salivary glands were markedly decreased in the group of lithium medic¡©ation.
2). ""Rb uptake rates were significantly decreased in the renal cortex of the rats received lithium.
3). Little significant increase in uptake rates was noted in the liver and lung of lithium group.
4). There were no changes in uptake rates of small intestine and little decrease in those of abdominal wall muscle of lithium group.
5. It is considered that thirst following administration of lithium was due partly to a relative decre¡©ase in blood flow of salivary glands, and polyuria might not be related to renal blood flow.
